Description

In November 2020 Westminster passed the first major piece of fisheries legislation in 40 years - the Fisheries Act 2020. If the powers provided within the Act are embraced by the UK fisheries administrations there is a real opportunity for fisheries management to contribute to ocean recovery; delivering healthy oceans which provide a low carbon, low impact source of sustainable protein as part of a UK food strategy; and in turn, support job opportunities in coastal communities and beyond. One of the objectives in the Act is the climate change objective which is a relatively new consideration for fisheries management. WWF, RSPB and the Marine Conservation Society are keen to explore what this may equate to in practical terms as part of a wider ecosystems based approach to sustainable fisheries and marine management. To that end we are seeking to commission a suitably experienced consulting firm or individual to research and compile a report that will set out what climate (and nature) smart fisheries might look like for UK fisheries.
