Description

This requirement facilitates delivery of peatland restoration NRW work areas. The requirement comprises various surveys of forestry and peatlands and our requirements are broken down into three distinct topics 1. Afforested Peat surveys of Forest stands on Deep peat and assessment of restoration potential base on specification in Lot 1 2. Hydrological survey and conceptual understanding of all peatland types (not only those on afforested land). Specification Lot 2 3. Vegetation/peat condition surveys of all peatland types (not only those on afforested land). Specification Lot 3

Lot Division

1 Afforested Peat surveys of Forest stands on Deep peat and assessment of restoration potential base

The purpose of this contract is to provide an assessment of peat bodies within the afforested estate across Wales in order to identify priority areas for restoration to open peatland habitat. This contract will exclude some forest blocks currently subject to the preparation of Forest Resource Plans or covered by other activities such as windfarm Habitat Management Plans. Forest blocks selected for survey are listed in Annex 1. The survey will focus on “Deep Peaty Soils” according to the definition of Vanguelova et al (2012). Additional information: The purpose of this contract is to provide an assessment of peat bodies within the afforested estate across Wales in order to identify priority areas for restoration to open peatland habitat. 2 Peatland Hydrology Surveys

Natural Resources Wales is responsible for developing and implementing Wales’s first National Peatlands Action Programme (NPAP). The purpose of this programme is to restore peatland ecosystems across Wales, with a focus in the first five years of the programme on six priority action themes. The programme (and NRW more widely) has a range of hydrological assessment and monitoring requirements for peatland and related terrestrial wetland ecosystems. This specification identifies and characterises the main categories of work required under this lot. Additional information: The programme has a range of hydrological assessment and monitoring requirements for peatland and related terrestrial wetland ecosystems. The main characteristics of the work are defined as follows: - Baseline assessments of peatland site hydrology - Site investigations, instrumentation, and monitoring of key hydrological metrics.

3 Vegetation surveys

Vegetation/peat condition surveys of all peatland types (not only those on afforested land). Additional information: The programme has a range of vegetation survey and assessment requirements, both in terms of pre-restoration site assessments and post restoration monitoring. The main characterises of the work required under this lot are as follows: - Mapping and characterising the vegetation cover of sites - Collection of baseline vegetation data from plots - Condition assessment
