Description
BEIS intends to appoint contractors to undertake desk based research and field work on hydrogen to support the development of standards required for the re-purposing of existing gas infrastructure downstream of the emergency control valve to be used with hydrogen. This programme will serve to support and inform future policy appraisal in Government and to inform the development of policies and measures to meet UK carbon budgets. The work covers a range of priority research areas to support the creation of standards which will support hydrogen trials in the UK. Please note: Mott McDonald have been appointed by BEIS as technical support for the Hydrogen Heating Program. They will not be involved in the creation of the specification or ITT for this work, however they will be advising BEIS on the outputs from this contract. All necessary steps will be taken to mitigate any actual or perceived conflict of interest potentially arising as a result.
Lot Division
1 | Purging Domestic & Non-Domestic This will include the development of an outline methodology and the trialling of this methodology in a test arrangement or test site to include monitoring of gas concentrations, equipment needed, safety measures, time taken and potential for direct or indirect purging. Additional information: Suppliers can apply for any or all lots. |
2 | Material & Component Suitability - Domestic and Non-domestic This would address evidence gaps in terms of basic material and component compatibility. The initial step would be to characterise all of the materials that hydrogen could encounter in end user systems, considering the materials compatibility, longevity and modes of failure for components. Additional information: Suppliers can apply for any or all lots. |
3 | Non-Domestic Piped Systems - Tightness and Material Compatibility This would expand evidence gained from Hy4Heat in this area for end user systems, across the full possible range of piped systems converted, either demonstrating tightness or highlighting existing systems for which there will be risks. Additional information: Suppliers can apply for any or all lots. |
4 | Consolidation of Domestic Ventilation and Non- Domestic Impacts Research on the impact and practicability of additional ventilation requirements for hydrogen in the building stock. There is also a requirement to take the findings of domestic research and as far as possible consider the implications for non-domestic buildings. Additional information: Suppliers may apply for any or all lots. |
5 | Pipe Sizing and pressure drop criteria To help understand whether pipes would have sufficient capacity with hydrogen, this would provide: i) a methodology by which existing pipes can be assessed and new pipes can be sized for the full range of domestic and non-domestic installation types; ii) a criteria to specify the extent by which existing natural gas operating pressures could be varied for hydrogen. Additional information: Suppliers may apply for any or all lots. |
6 | Meter Location and Ventilation Study This research would consider representative meter housing and location arrangements, with consideration of necessary clearances and ventilation requirements for DSEAR and the potential for humidity/water build up. Additional information: Suppliers may apply for any or all lots. |
7 | Excess flow valve (EFV) This research would consider installation and calibration work for the EFV (Excess flow valve) including what methodology and basis which will be used to set the shutoff point for the valves during installation. Additional information: Suppliers may apply for any or all lots. |
