** PREVIEW NOTICE, please check Find a Tender for full details. ** NOTICE - POSITIONAL MONITORING SYSTEMS FOR FISHING VESSELS UNDER 12M IN LENGTH As England's marine manager, the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) protects and develops England's seas, coasts and communities for the benefit of generations to come. Assuring licensed commercial fishing is undertaken in accordance with regulations is a key component of our work to balance the requirements of people with a commercial interest in the sea with protecting our precious marine environment. Data has a key role to play in delivering on this aim and so the MMO is currently delivering a project to introduce vessel monitoring systems (VMS) on England-registered vessels 12m long and under, ahead of VMS becoming a legal requirement. Vessels over 12m already carry VMS devices. VMS records the location, speed and heading of a vessel using a secure, tamper-resistant system on board. Using a secure line, it sends this information to the MMO's national operations centre using mobile telephone or satellite technology. The MMO is now seeking to engage with manufacturers and/or suppliers of tracking devices to explain its plans in more detail as it seeks to establish a broad range of products that will meet the needs of fishing vessel owners ahead of the forthcoming legal requirements. If your business has a product that can be used or adapted for use to supply positional data from fishing vessels at sea, please email IVMS@marinemanagement.org.uk to register your interest so we can provide further details.
