Description
The Century Theatre is culturally significant locally and has national significance. Built between 1948-1952, the theatre is one of a kind in the world. Built as a touring theatre after WWII, the theatre travelled to over 50 town and cities without theatres as a result of bombing. 15 or more locations had permanent theatres built as a direct result of the Century Theatre's success. Designed and built between 1948 and 1952, Century Theatre is Britain's oldest surviving travelling theatre. It was later renovated and reassembled on a purpose-built site, adjoining the historic mine buildings of the former Snibston Colliery in Coalville, Leicestershire. With a seating capacity of 206, the theatre requires a ventilation system that can provide heat in the winter and cool air in the summer.
