Description

Birmingham City Council ('The Council) has a duty under the Environment Act 1995 to evaluate the quality of the air within its administrative area, having regards to the presence of certain pollutants and to establish strategies for their reduction should they be found to be above statutory limits. The Council has declared an Air Quality Management Area for nitrogen dioxide and has introduced an Air Quality Action Plan[1] to direct what steps the Council will take to reduce pollutant concentrations including the operation of a Clean Air Zone. The Council requires a supplier for the provision of maintenance services for FOURTEEN real time Air Quality Monitoring Stations. The Council currently operates a network of eight 'real-time' air quality monitoring stations that assess the levels of pollution at a number of locations[2] across the City. A maintenance contract is required to ensure the stations continue to operate with minimal disruption to retain the very high data capture rates obtained on this network in recent years. The Council are seeking to install a further six 'real time' air quality monitoring stations to monitor air pollution in response to the introduction of the Clean Air Zone (CAZ). These will be located around and within the city centre ring road (A4540). This contract will be for a period of 2 years commencing 1st February 2022 until 31st January 2024 with the option to extend a further 12 months subject to satisfactory performance.
