Description

Ulster Wildlife is seeking a quote for remediation of an area of lead contaminated peat at Ballynahone Special Area of Conservation (SAC) in County Derry. Work involves cutting of adjacent wooded vegetation for access, excavation and subsequent treatment and safe disposal of contaminated peat, and installation of contour bunds to facilitate ecological restoration

Total Quantity or Scope

Up to 5 tonnes of lead may have been deposited when Ballynahone was used as a clay pigeon shooting range between 1966 and 1986 (EHS 2004). Ulster Wildlife requires a contractor to trim adjacent wooded vegetation to allow access of machinery to the contaminated area; excavation of the peat and removal, treatment and safe disposal of contaminants; installation of peat contour bunds and levelling of the area to <0.5% to leave the area suitable for restoration and active peat formation.
