Description

The robot is a critical piece of equipment that uses a minimally invasive surgical approach, the introduction of which was a major step towards transforming cancer service within Wales. This pioneering service ensures that treatment for Welsh patients with operable tumours will be revolutionised as they will have access to the most advanced, up to date and innovative cancer treatments in multiple cancer specialties. The urology service at Cardiff & Vale UHB provides centralised cancer care to 400 prostate and kidney cancer patients every year. The current maintenance and consumables contract is held with the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), Intuitive Surgical Ltd and is shortly due to expire. The award of this contract is to maintain service support and consumables to support the Da Vinci Xi Robot situated within the Urology directorate at Cardiff & Vale UHB.

Total Quantity or Scope

A successful Health Technology Fund (HTF) bid was approved by the Welsh Government in June 2013 in order to implement robotic surgery for minimally invasive treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer in South Wales. The da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgery System was procured by Cardiff and Vale UHB in 2014 and at the time was the most advanced robotic surgery system in the world. The award of this contract will ensure consistent maintenance, service support and consumables are provided to support the use of the Da Vinci Robot.
