Description
As the regulator of the nursing, midwifery and nursing associate professions, on occasions we need to consider if a person is fit to practise without restriction. Where we have a concern regarding this, we might bring these concerns before a meeting or hearing of the practice committees. The members of practice committees (Panel Members) are independent decision makers. they are required to attend hearings and meetings of our practice committees across the United Kingdom and will carry out the functions of a panel member in accordance with the provisions of the Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 and the Nursing and Midwifery (Fitness to Practise) Rules 2004. The practice committees are provided with advice and guidance by Legal Assessors who are independent contractors. Their role is essential in both protecting the public and maintaining the public interest. We will soon be competitively procuring a contract with a recruitment agency, which shall provide a selection and appointment process to enable us to undertake a values-based recruitment campaign to recruit up to 70 panel members to be appointed to serve on our Practice Committees and up to 20 Legal Assessors to be appointed and included in the NMC's list of approved Legal Assessors, both by September 2023.
