Direct Supply of Renewable Energy to provide charging for electric ferries at the Corran Ferry crossing, Lochaber.

Total Quantity or Scope

Highland Council are currently developing a major transport decarbonisation project through the replacement of two diesel ferries that operate across the Corran Narrows of Loch Linnhe, with two battery driven electric ferries. As part of this innovative project The Highland Council are looking for a partner in the renewable energy sector to secure a direct supply for the charging of the vessels.

** PREVIEW NOTICE, please check Find a Tender for full details. ** Any partner must be able to supply electricity for a 100% renewable generation source by direct wire to the Ardgour side of the crossing - maps can be supplied if required. Innovative approaches to this requirement are invited to look at the best way to deliver this. For example should the charging equipment be sited at this location or as our energy partner, would you be able to also provide a solution to this? If the Council decides to provide the charging equipment, would your organisation be in a position to hook the supply up to the charging equipment? What would you suggest as the best approach - should this be a hook up, commission and supply partnership? If so, please explain how you would address this. If not, what recommendation on approach would you make? Any partner must be in a position to provide energy on a 24-hour basis with an expected demand of between 4.5mW and 8mW per day 365 days of the year. Most of this demand is likely to be overnight with some additional requirements during the rest of the day. Please state how quickly your approach would be able to meet these demands. In addition, please state what your approach would be in terms of recharging the vessels and the best way to address this - a single ferry at a time or both charging at the same time? What would happen to any surplus power and is there any opportunity for the Council to share in the benefits of potentially returning excess power to the grid? While there will be a grid connection for back up, the Council is looking to ensure a consistent supply of renewable electricity that can be provided to meet the day-to-day operational running of the service. As such any partner organisation must be able to demonstrate their experience in their respective field and their commitment to work with the Council in the delivery of this innovative project. Interested parties are invited to submit a short response to these questions in order to allow the Council to build its strategy for this provision and to incorporate any key ideas into any future tendering exercise.
