Description

Negotiation - continuity of the Airwave Radio service must be maintained until the roll out of the new national ESN service being provided by the Home Office. As this service is provided by a sole supplier then a negotiated approach was necessary. Extension of term -Earlier this year the Home Office announced that it would need to extend the Airwave contract and push back National Shut Down (NSD) from December 2022 until December 2026.

Legal Justification

Initial UK government plans called for the Airwave TETRA system to be replaced at the end of 2019, when the Emergency Services Network (ESN) was meant to be complete. But ESN is still not operational, therefore a first Airwave extension through 2022 was progressed and this second extension through 2026 is now required
