The Monkton Terrace Footbridges were constructed in circa 1974. They comprise two separate structures supporting public footpaths. Each bridge sits either side of the Network Rail bridge (masonry arch) which carries the main carriageway of Monkton Terrace. The structures carry pedestrians and cyclists over two railway lines. The southern line is owned by Nexus Rail and forms part of the Pelaw to South Shields branch of the Tyne and Wear Metro.
