Description
This project will compare the methodology, outputs and data quality of different Life Cycle Assessment methodologies and standards widely used for construction products, particularly steel, cement and concrete. The methodologies compared will include widely used international standards for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), the newly developed EU CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Methodology), and the GHG Protocol. Expected outputs include: • Infographics with benchmarks and data quality • A tool to develop life cycle assessments using different methodologies (including CBAM and EPDs) • Comparison of life cycle emissions using different methodologies using site and modelled data • Input and benchmark data for UK and imported products The project is expected to run to March 2025, budget is a maximum of £175k.
Total Quantity or Scope
The research project will develop a tool to produce LCAs of concrete, steel and cement products purchased and/or produced in the UK. It will investigate variation and take-up of different reporting programmes. The procurement will be an open competition, and consortia and partnerships are encouraged to ensure a diversity of products and methods are included.
