Description
Blood Glucose and ketone monitoring including middle ware, stripes, training and maintainance
Total Quantity or Scope
A direct award for this contract to Abbott will ensure business continuity for the POCT service and In-patient Diabetic Service within Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust (DBTH NHS FT). Due to the current contract, expiring (August 2023) there is insufficient time to complete a full tender process without compromising the current service, which poses a huge patient safety risk. The Abbott glucose and ketone meters are currently in use in approximately 105 clinical areas within DBTH NHS FT, with over 3000 members of staff trained to use the meter. Implementation of a new providers meter would require significant resources in market scoping, middleware procurement, manufacturing lead-time for providing meters, verification of meters, training the workforce, any required changes to patient pathways, consumable management and IT implementation and the resource required to facilitate this. The duration of the new contract will be for a three-year period from the point that the current contract ends and upto the point where a procurement exercise is undertaken and a new contract awarded. The duration has been determined so that the expiration aligns with other trusts contracts within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYB Pathology) network. This gives the SYB network time to draft a region wide specification for a Glucose and Ketone Meter contract. This is the current planned strategy, however this is subject to change. The current plan is for SYB to move to a maturing status for the POCT service as per National NHS England guidance and this contract will enable preparation work and planning for this to be achieved. The proposed contract extension in the interim is to prevent significant risk from a service delivery and clinical perspective for the patient population of DBTH NHS FT.
