Legal Justification
For approximately 20 years, Newcastle Dental School has operated a number of products utilising Planmeca Romexis software. This include a DPT units on all floors and three within Dental Radiology and units at outreach community clinics. A Small Volume Cone Beam CT and 3 Intra-oral Xray tubes. The Trust also have a VistaScan digital scanner within radiology, to acquire occlusal radiographs for the entire Dental Hospital which is already integrated into Romexis. All Radiology staff, clinicians, clinical trainers, Dental Nurses and students have all been trained using this equipment and software, so continuity of service is vital. In terms of output the Dental Hospital sees 3500 new patients every month, of those 42, 000 patients there is the potential for all of them to require plain film imaging or CT Cone Beam. The key requirement for this project was failover and provision of service through redundancy. This can be achieved by ensuring portability of products between I.T systems and maintaining the existing infrastructure of Romexis as a capture/delivery software. The VistaScan is able to be integrated into Romexis and accessed by any client that is on the same network, this is the same for the ProScanner 2.0. As such if there were to be a failure of a portion of the network, or “capture PC” (PC designated as a standalone client connected to a VistaScan or ProScanner 2.0), because of existing infrastructure it could quickly and easily be switched to an alternative existing client. Maintaining existing software also minimises the training requirement of staff members, clinical trainers, and students already accustomed to its operation. This equates to approximately 500 individuals.
