Legal Justification
The Xtreme CT II scanner requested is the only device capable of performing high-resolution bone scanning for research purposes in humans. This is required for planned studies including investigations of bone microstructure which cannot be imaged by any other method. Its resolution of 58μm is much higher than alternatives such as our current pQCT (400μm), DXA (500μm), clinical CT (CT:500-600μm) and MRI (250-1,500μm). There are no other high-resolution scanners, and SCANCO are the manufacturers and sole suppliers of the device.
