Fusion Energy Café, The Bridge Skills Hub, Bridge Place, Worksop, S80 1DT Community Training Café Opportunity Overview Bassetlaw District Council (BDC) is working in collaboration with the UK Atomic Energy Agency (UKAEA), and the North Notts Business Improvement District (NNBID) to open the first Fusion Energy Café in the world. Bassetlaw District Council (BDC), the UK Atomic Energy Agency (UKAEA), and the North Notts Business Improvement District (NNBID) are looking to collaborate with an organisation and/or training provider to: • Operate the Café in The Bridge Skills Hub in Worksop providing training and work placements for individuals with a disability or/and who are not in education, employment, or training (NEET), or are long-term unemployed. • Provide accredited catering and hospitality training for learners working within the café. This will provide the opportunity for volunteering, training, employment, and signposting, as well as joint investment in community development and social inclusion. Any bid would need to cover both aspects of the services – which could be done via a single bidder, jointly as a partnership or as a Contactor and Subcontractor relationship. An event will be held prior to the full tender release allowing suppliers to meet potential partners for the purposes of covering the whole of the bid. Whilst this kind of arrangement may be more familiar to the VCSE community, independent café operators are not precluded from applying if they feel the business model could work alongside the catering and hospitality training provision and the skills outreach focus of the community café. As an example, you could be a VCSE that has an education contract in place to deliver catering and hospitality training or there will be the opportunity to partner you with a training provider. That is why we want to hear from VCSEs, independent café operators and training providers. Where is and what is the Fusion Energy Cafe The Fusion Energy Cafe is located at The Bridge Skills Hub in Worksop. The cafe unit is attached to the Skills Hub, it has an internal door to access the Skills Hub for learners and staff as well as double doors for public access. The internal design and branding relate to the STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) Programme which will deliver the first prototype fusion energy plant at West Burton in Bassetlaw. The cafe will host skills and community outreach activities for the district. The cafe will provide an immersive and interactive experience where visitors and residents can learn about fusion and science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) opportunities. The internal fit out is currently underway which includes screens and tech corner where children, young people and adults can learn more about fusion, STEP and STEM activities.

Total Quantity or Scope

About the cafe seating area The cafe is located on the ground floor. It has double doors that link directly to the high street and the building is located at the junction of Watson Road and Bridge Place, one of the main gateways into the town centre. There is an internal door that leads into the Skills Hub which will be on access control for Skills Hub staff and learners and the cafe and training operators. The main cafe area is approx. 1475 sq. ft in size. The cafe can accommodate approx. 44 covers. The internal fit out includes all furniture, cafe counter and food preparation area behind the counter. An artist impression is provided below. There are two single cubicle toilets, one is an accessible toilet. There are two showers and lockers in the Skills Hub for cafe staff, if required. The cafe has extensive glazed area to the front of the property so it light, bright, and visible. The cafe will have WI-FI access. Cafe Operating Hours The Skills Hub is operational from 8.30am-5pm Monday-Thursday and 8.30am-4.30pm on a Friday. We anticipate the cafe will operate from 8.30am-4pm Monday - Friday. As the café is in Worksop town centre there will be good footfall on Saturday’s, so this would be encouraged. The cafe operator can open on a Saturday if they wish. There will be the need to service twilight events that relate to UKAEA and BDC activities - the approach to this can be discussed. There is the opportunity outside of the UKAEA, BDC and NNBID skills and business outreach engagement activities that the cafe operator can hire space to community, education, and businesses to host their events. There is also the opportunity to provide a buffet menu to Skills Hub occupiers. About the Kitchen A new commercial kitchen is currently being installed. This includes a six-ring induction hob and oven with extractor above. Undercounter dishwasher, undercounter fridge in the main kitchen. Hand wash, food prep and dish wash sink. Countertop for food preparation and a hatch with fire shutter is being installed. The main kitchen area is 194 sq. ft, plus dry store 75 sq. ft. There is a dry store that will house a full height fridge and freezer. Inside the cafe behind the cafe counter there will be a hand-wash sink, stainless steel counter and storage, an integrated fridge and plumbing for coffee machine. NNBID have allocated funding to purchase countertop equipment such as coffee machine, microwave, jacket potato oven, panini machine and till. These items will remain the property of NNBID but will be used by the cafe operator during their occupation. Hospitality and Catering Training We are happy to work with one Café operator that has a training contract or to work with an operator and training provider, with existing training contracts, as part of a working collaborative. In relation to the training provision the Café operator and training provider will need to demonstrate that they hold an education contract to deliver hospitality and catering training to individuals with a learning disability, which are NEET and/or long-term unemployed. The training will need to operate year-round rather than term time as the busy periods will be during school holidays, therefore learners will be needed during these periods to support the cafe operation alongside core staff. Contract Information The duration of the contract will be 36 months with the possibility of an extra 12 months subject to agreement between BDC and the successful provider/s. A minimum of a three-month notice period will be in place. The costs associated with the cafe operation are rent, service charge, energy costs (electricity and water) and business rates (potential rates relief subject to operators’ constitution) as well as any operating costs A rent-free period will be offered in year one followed by a stepped rent from years two and three. There is a financial contribution from the UKAEA in years 1-3 that will cover the service charge (excluding energy costs and business rates).
