Legal Justification
The Illumina sequencer for GeoMx is required by the Medicines Discovery Catapult Ltd (MDC) as it forms part of the GeoMx workflow for whole spatial transcriptome analysis. Illumina sequencer for GeoMx is required, there is no competition and competition is absent for technical reasons as the Illumina sequencer for GeoMx is the only instrument which has access to Illumina adapters within the nanostring reagents. Nanostring have developed a workflow with Illumina where Illumina’s i5 and i7 sequences specifically add P5 and P7 sequences for binding to Illumina’s flow cell. These sequences are part of the SeqCode that are for the library prep and there are no alternative sequences to obtain for analysis. Furthermore, the software offers a selection of Illumina sequencers to choose from when finalizing the readout group (to be able to start sequencing) – this will create files that are tailored towards use on the respective Illumina platforms. Most of all, the sequences (FASTQ files) need to be processed in order to be made compatible with the GeoMx for import. The pipeline software is tailored to work with the Illumina output files (including Illumina’s index sequences) and cannot be used on sequences produced by any other system. Or you can directly process these files within Illumina’s BaseSpace environment. The purchase of the equipment will enable a fully integrated workflow of the two systems. The MDC will follow a 10 day standstill period ending on midnight on Friday 26th November 2021. Following the successful completion of the standstill period the MDC will award the contract to Illumina Cambridge Ltd.
