Description

Delivery of an 18-24 month quality improvement project for Cancer Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings across the East of England (EoE) Cancer Alliance Network by developing evidence-base and locally driven resources to support the most judicious and effective decision-making for patients with cancer. The project should be delivered across the following phases: Phase 1 Training course in MDT effectiveness and improvement The objective of phase 1 is to deliver training to EoE Specialty MDT members in the use of validated assessment tools and quality improvement methods in order to develop a culture of continuous quality improvements including: a. Delivery of the training course for up to 150 participants (up to 50 MDTs; up to 3 members per MDT), incl. 6x 1 day sessions; b. Development and production of training handbook for each participant. Phase 2 Evaluation of MDT effectiveness program Phase 2 should be a mixed-method quality improvement initiative. The objective is to facilitate quality improvement initiatives, and assessments to measure the improvement. Data collection (incl. assessments, re-assessments, and outcomes) during this period will be conducted by the local MDT members who will have undergone training in the use of the tools as part of the phase 1 of this project and will include: a. Follow-up support in the use of MDT improvement tools; b. Tailored feedback to MDTs based on baseline assessment of MDT functionality which is when the MDTs will agree on the changes they will be implementing going forward; for those MDTs who agree to be filmed, feedback will be provided using video-based reflective learning; c. Support in post-feedback re-assessment using the MDT improvement tools; and d. Post-training evaluation to demonstrate effectiveness of the training. During this phase a sub-sample of MDT members should be interviewed to explore their perspective on MDT functioning with focus on effective teamwork, unintended consequences and acceptability and feasibility of the team audit. Phase 3 Development of legacy resources for sustained MDT effectiveness The objective of phase 3 is to develop resources based on the work conducted in phase 2 and in collaboration with key stakeholders. Activities will include: a. Production of unique handbook for MDTs across the EoE Cancer Alliance; b. Development of additional training materials based on local requirements; c. Delivery of a regional symposium for MDTs for exchange of knowledge/experiences with local improvements; d. Exploration of partnership with industry partners to optimise funding for ongoing quality improvement work and potentially digitalise the existing MDT assessment tools.
