Description

The opportunity relates to training to improve delivery of Naso-gastric (NG) feeding for children and young people (CYP) in need in inpatient Children and Young People (CYP) Mental Health units, with a focus on reducing restrictive practices to improve outcomes and save lives. NHS England are seeking Expressions of Interest from Suppliers capable of meeting the below requirement as part of development of the procurement strategy. Further information on how to register an interest along with the submission requirements, is contained in the attachment to this Notice. The current demand for inpatient services and increase in presentations of CYP requiring urgent treatment has meant that more CYP with an eating disorder and mental health issues are receiving care and treatment (including naso-gastric feeding) in acute paediatric wards. Reducing the need for restraint while a young person is NG fed has benefits for the patient and staff, and being able to effectively de-escalate situations can reduce incidents on a ward. The supplier must be able to provide staff with an effective framework for preventing, de-escalating, and safely responding to crisis behaviour. There is a focus on the person in distress and the member of staff. The objective for the training is for the participants to gain a broad range of tools to help them manage their own emotional responses and identify escalating behaviours in others. This notice asks for an organisation to design and deliver 'train the trainer' style training on reducing restrictive practice for young people in acute paediatric wards. Around 125 individuals from NHS Trusts should receive at least 24 hours of training so that they are able to conduct a needs assessment in their Trust, and then carry out the required training. The training should cover conflict resolution to ensure staff know how to de-escalate situations and should also have a module on clinical holding. The course needs to be endorsed by relevant bodies, including the Restraint Reduction Network.
