Description

Access Refurbishment of Bass Rock Lighthouse: The proposed works principally involves the repair of defective concrete access stairs, paths and hard standings and installation/replacement of corroded handrails Bass Rock is a steep crag on the southern entrance to the Firth of Forth. The island rises out of the sea to a height of 107 metres and it is about a mile in circumference. It is an important nesting ground for seabirds, including 40,000 gannets. Halfway up the Rock stands the ruins of a Pre-Reformation Chapel. Subsequently a castle and dungeons were built and later partly demolished. The Lighthouse was established in 1903 and is founded on the remnants of part of the historic castle. The lighthouse is Grade C Listed. The light Character is Flashing White (3) every 20 seconds, with a range of 10NM. The island is accessed from North Berwick by boat with a concrete path leading from the steps at the boat landings up to the lighthouse through the Ruins of the Castle walls. For Contractors hoping to tender for this work attendance at the Contractor's Site Visit is mandatory. The site visit is scheduled for Tuesday the 1 August 2023 and will involve a boat transfer from North Berwick Harbour (time to be determined). Those wishing to attend the site visit will need to confirm via Delta messenger no later than 16:00 on Thursday the 27 July 2023 . Please see below dates and times for Contractors to attend for mask face-fit testing, if required. For the site visit it should also be noted that Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) must be worn. There is a specification for RPE within the Pre-Construction Information however this enhanced specification is only required for extended time on the Rock and for engaging in works which may disturb the guano. If Contractors wish to make use of loan RPE then they will need to make the NLB aware of this and confirm they will then also attend at NLB Head Office (84 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3DA) between 1400 and 1600 on Wednesday the 26 July 2023 or Friday 28 July between 09:00 and 10:00 for face-fit testing. (please note must be clean shaven) Due to the location of this site, the majority of materials and equipment will be transported to and from the site via NLB Tender & Helicopter. See sections of NLB Helicopter manual for details of working with the helicopter included within the tender documents. The site can be accessed by boat, subject to local weather conditions.
