Description

A national digital tobacco treatment service that will provide adult smokers (aged 18 years and older) in England access to one or more digital tobacco dependency application(s) (apps). The service will be provided as a choice alongside other existing tobacco dependency treatment options, where available. The core offer of the digital service, which will be free at the point of access, access to a digital app/webplatform providing behavioural and motivational support for tobacco dependency, tailored access to live tobacco dependency support and a free and direct supply of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), pharmacotherapy and/or nicotine containing vaping devices (vapes) (up to 8 week supply). Tobacco dependency advisors employed by the digital apps will meet the training standards defined by the National Centre for smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT). The aim of the service is to increase the overall available national capacity to treat the 5.6 million adults in England that are smokers, and to improve choice of treatment option through the provision of a service that can be accessed by the service user without the need to travel at a time and location that suits them. This degree of flexibility in treatment will be particularly valuable to people working shift patterns, people with caring commitments or those with chaotic lives. The service will initially be rolled out across a defined population cohort (NHS Staff). This is to ensure the service is piloted on a smaller scale, with a strong research component being delivered alongside to ensure further scaling is evidence informed. Recognising the potential for the programme to be delivered at scale (provided it is supported by the evidence), the programme will be commissioned in a way that will allow for expansion flexibility during the course of the contract.
