Total Quantity or Scope
Barnsley College is committed to the delivery of a state-of-the art Institute of Technology at the Church Street Campus (University Centre) to enhance the delivery of Higher Education technical qualifications. The building opened in 1932 as the Barnsley Mining and Technical College and presents an ongoing story that it will be developed into a modern, technology-rich Institute of Technology (IoT). The College has engaged with a design team to develop a RIBA Stage 4 (design and build) package including drawings and specifications. The College is part of an IoT collaboration in South Yorkshire, the SYIoT. An Institute of Technology (IoT) is a new type of institution, with a prestigious and distinct identity, that specialises in delivering higher level technical skills, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) subjects at scale. IoTs bring together employers with the best existing high-quality provision in Further Education and Universities. Together they plan, design, and deliver the higher technical education needed in an area to drive future economic growth and boost productivity. The Church Street building requires refurbishment to bring it into use as the Barnsley IoT. This includes creating a central atrium, refurbishing existing teaching space, creating new LRC spaces and new catering facilities. The vision for the project is to provide a 'best in class' teaching and learning environment for HE students. The heart of the project being the new Atrium, a combination of learning resource and study zones set over 3 mezzanine floors with a new glazed roof above and a modern café at ground floor level which will deliver the 'wow' factor at the centre of the building making excellent use of the space available. All around the Atrium are existing classrooms and the 2 middle floors of the building are to become the main IoT spaces and, once complete, will provide fully modernised, flexible and adaptable learning spaces alongside a small number of ICT rich classrooms ensuring they provide the best possible teaching and learning environments, carefully modernised to combine some of the beautiful existing architecture and features of an Art Deco building fully modernised to meet the needs of a 21st Century technology rich University Centre. The Main Entrance will maximise to synergy of the beautiful external architecture and the stone steps leading into a building which is striking with modern design in the Reception allowing visitors to see into the building and for them to get a clear sense that they have entered an excellent and beautiful building the moment they walk through the door.
